Day 53 - Kuranda Train and Skyrail

Today we took the Kuranda Train to Kuranda Station and then took the Skyrail through the rainforest!

Our day started with a transfer from Harbor Lights to Freshwater Railway Station.  At the station, there was time to enjoy the scenery, check out the museum, as we waited on the platform for our train.

The train finally arrived at Freshwater Station and we were off for an historical rail journey to Kuranda.

We were seated in the exclusive KSR Gold Class carriage!  On had our own attendant that provided us with a wonderful selection of fresh appetizers and seasonal local produce.  There was also unlimited drinks for us to enjoy! The best part was that there was only 6 people in our train car - Me, mom, Sondra, Bill, and another couple!  Plus the car was decorated in gorgeous woods and plush chairs!

We were off on one of the world's most scenic rail routes, through hand-hewn tunnels and over bridges spanning spectacular gorges.

We traveled around curves, all the time appreciating what an amazing engineering feat of this railroad!

More Curves!

We passed waterfalls along the way!

and beautiful sights!

The smallest station ever!

We stopped at Barron Falls to enjoy a spectacular view of the falls and surrounding area!

Once we arrived at beautiful Kuranda Station, it was a short walk from the station to Kuranda Village. This was a fascinating little city and we spend time exploring the many and varied shops.

We enjoyed shopping at the Heritage Markets which are filled with colorful and interesting arts and crafts.

Then we had a short stroll down to Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

We boarded the cablecar and we were whisked off to enjoy the most beautiful rainforest  experience!  We glided over the rainforest canopy.

The views were amazing- large trees, rivers, canyons, and more trees!

After traveling about 15 minutes we stopped at a station where we could walk around and see the views!  It was a boardwalk over the canopy with views of Barron Falls from the opposite side of the train tracks.

We boarded the Skyrail again and enjoyed more spectacular views of the rainforest.

Again we stopped at another lookout point where we saw the largest spider!  Also there was another spot to view the rainforest valley! We had a wonderful time viewing the amazing scenery of the rainforest.

Back on the Skyrail enroute to Caravonica Lake, but here the views of the rainforest changed to views of the city!  It was amazing to city the sights!

We transfered back to our hotel, where we enjoyed leftover spaghetti!  Bill, mom and I then went to the town of Cairns and walked around.  There were many restaurants along the boardwalk area, all with outdoor seating. We went to the night markets which had an Asian market and tons of shops! There was everything you could think to buy at these markets! It was fun to go from stall to stall looking at all the handicrafts!
