Day 32 - Cruising across the Pacific!

Today starts out cruise across the Pacific! A five day stretch of sea days!  The Pacific Ocean is named from Mare Pacficum meaning peaceful sea, but so far it really isn't peaceful!  There are pretty big swells and strong winds and we are rocking lot from side to side!

Some facts about the Pacific Ocean:
1. The Pacific Ocean encompasses one third of the Earth's surface, making it the largest body of water with an area of 69.4 million square miles, an area significantly larger than the entire Earth's landmass.

2. The lowest point on Earth, the Mariana Trench, lies in the Pacific Ocean at 35,797 feet below sea level.

3. The average depth of the entire ocean is 14,000 feet.

There are several lectures about the Pacific and the areas we are going to see while we are there.  One thing we learned about is the nautical mile, which is the unit of distance used in navigation.  The nautical mile is equivalent to 6078 feet or 1.15 statute mile.  One knot equals one nautical mile per hour.  Mariners originally measured speed by observing a chip of wood passing down the side of the vessel.  Later developments included a wooden board attached to a reel of line.  Mariners  measured speed by noting how many knots in the line unreeled as the ship moved a measured amount of time, hence the term knot!

Since the seas were rough today, Karen, Jane, Mom and I went to knitting! My mom is learning how to knit and I am going to learn to knit now! I am half way down with crocheting my scarf and now I am going to knit a shawl!  So we worked on knitting!  We decided to go to the dining room for lunch because it is easier to have someone bring your food!  Then since it was too rocky to go to watercolors on the top deck, we sat at the explorers lounge and worked on our blogs, knitting and I worked on my classes!

Tonight Captain Jonathan and Karen joined us for dinner at the Dining Room! We had a wonderful time talking and listening to stories of the Captain's adventures as well as our tablemates stories!  Captain Mercer has been sailing for ever! Karen does a ton of things such as interior decorating, remodeling and renovating houses!  I think we have the best table!  Pat talks about her fly fishing experiences and sailing adventures! She is very knowledgable about reading and has taught us to say "Top Drawer" in a North Shore accent.  Then Jane and Barry have so many wonderful stories!  Barry is a pilot as well as many other things, Jane just retired from IBM, they have a cottage in Canada, they are very well traveled and are very very nice!  I really enjoy listening to them - They are both really smart and know a ton of stuff!  Art, a retired Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon, collects raw minerals and polishes them!  He is a very talented watercolorist and participates in the HAL choir.  He is also a wealth of information.  My mom and I really enjoy listening to them and often look at each other when our table is talking in amazement!
