Wilhelm Archipelago

Geography: Wilhelm Archipelago is an island archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula in Antarctica.
Distance from Pittsburgh: 11,905km or 7,397miles
Terrain: Ice
What You Must See: Ice and Iceburgs
Historical Fact: It was discovered by a German expedition under Eduard Dallmann, 1873-1874. He named them for Wilhelm I, then Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia.

Science Fact: Wilhelm Archipelago consists of a string of small islands, the largest and the most notable are Booth Island and Hovgaard Island.

Fun Fact: The peaks and cliffs of the Island provide shelter for the Lemaire Channel, through which many Antarctic cruise ships travel en route to the penguin colonies of Petermann Island.

Interesting Fact: The Lemaire channel is occasionally filled with drifting icebergs, but the waters of the channel are usually calm due to the sheltering cliffs.
