Montevideo, Uruguay





Geography: Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay, which is located in southern South America.  Uruguay boarders the South Atlantic Ocean and is located between Argentina and Brazil.

Currency:  Uruguayan Peso (UYU)

National Symbol: Sun of May

National Anthem: "Himno Nacional Uruguay"

Language:  Spanish is the only language spoken in Uruguay, although, some people speak Portunol, or Brazilero that is a Portuguese-Spanish mix on the Brazilian frontier.

Area Comparison: Uruguay is slightly smaller than the state of Washington

Terrain: The land is mostly rolling plains and low hills with a fertile coastal lowland.

Weather You Should Expect: Montevideo has a warm temperate climate with freezing temperatures almost unknown.  The predominantly flat landscape is also somewhat vulnerable to rapid changes from weather fronts, as well as to the pampero, a chilly and occasionally violent wind blowing north from the pampas plains in Argentina. The seasons in Montevideo are opposite those in the Northern Hemisphere - it will be summer there while back in Pittsburgh it is probably snowing!

What You Must See: There are several things to see around Montevideo.  Colonia del Sacramento, a nearby city, is the oldest city in Uruguay and was recently declared in UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The largest Latin American casino is located in Punta del Este, the beach resort that annually (in January and February) attracts the world’s jet-set community. Other sights include Catedral Madriz - famous burial grounds, Rambla de Montevideo -a boardwalk and Teatro Solis, a famous music theatre.

Historical Fact: Montevideo, founded by the Spanish is 1726 as a military stronghold, soon took advantage of its natural harbor to become an important commerical center.  

Science Trivia:  The Rio de Plata is the widest river in the world.

Interesting Fact: People will be drinking Mate, the national drink, a kind of herbal tea to de drunk with a metal straw.  The mate drink is the gaucho’s companion wherever he goes. It is an ancient Guaraní drink.

Fun Fact:  Uruguay is the  second-smallest country in South America, after Suriname.  It has a beautiful coast with white sand, dunes, large waves ideal for surfers, small attractive fishermen’s villages, places to do whale-watching in the ocean etc.

Name Origin: The name Uruguay has its origin in the Guaraní language and has several translations such as “River where the bird lives”, “river of painted birds”, “river of shells”, “river with many bends”. However,  the country is really called “Oriental Republic of Uruguay.”

Everything You Need to Know About the Flag:


There are nine equal horizontal stripes of white (top and bottom) alternating with blue. A white square in the upper hoist-side corner with a yellow sun bearing a human face known as the Sun of May with 16 rays that alternate between triangular and wavy. The stripes represent the nine original departments of Uruguay. The sun symbol evokes the legend of the sun breaking through the clouds on 25 May 1810 as independence was first declared from Spain (Uruguay subsequently won its independence from Brazil).
