Day 94 - Piraeus

We arrived in Piraeus at approximately 9 am in the morning!  We were ferry lagged and needed to get cleaned up!  We eventually found our way to our ship's dock and grabbed some much needed food!

We decided to walk into PIraeus and explore the town on our own.  Luckily there was a little train that you could board for a ride around the town with stops at several locations.  We took the train into the main square were we got out and walked around the main square. There were tons of outdoor cafes and several shops to browse.  We thought we would get back on the train but when we did, we ran into the Rabbi, Dov, and his wife, Alina, so we all decided to walk around some more.

Alina pretending to be Mary Poppins!

Alina was in search of a market she saw when they were on the bus. So we set off in search of the market.  We went up and down the streets, past churches and small stores.  Eventually we found the market!  There were people selling flea market items, then we found the fish market and there were live snails crawling everywhere.

One stall was selling eggs in a variety of colors.

A small street had all sorts of produce, herbs and flowers.

We bought a really good candy type food made from sesame, Halva, and well all split it. It was so good!

We really enjoyed the walk around the city!

Eventually we made it back in time to have a shower and get changed for a celebratory dinner for Jane and Barry's Anniversary with some of our friends - Paulette (the guest chef) and her husband, Daryl, Karen and Jonathan, Jim and Carol, Mal and Maxine.

We drove in the city of Athens, Jim had arranged a small bus for us which made the 30 minute each way trip easy.

Once in Athens, we went to the Elektra Palace Hotel for dinner. The location and the meal were superb, as the roof top dining room in the Elektra Hotel had floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the Acropolis.  The entire hilltop and the buildings were lit up for our viewing pleasure.

It was a smashing way to celebrate, and reminds us that you never know where life will take you - to think we could be in this setting, with 10 new friends, whose company we thoroughly enjoy!  Lucky us.
